Orthoptics

A paediatric and adult orthoptic service is provided in the Eye Clinic at Hillingdon Hospital.  Mount Vernon Hospital provides an adult orthoptic service and there is also a community paediatric service at Oaklands Medical Centre, Hillingdon.  Orthoptists are also part of the multidisciplinary team involved in the diagnosis and treatment of children referred by the Child Development Centre.

Orthoptists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities of eye movement and uniocular or binocular vision defects. These are listed below

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) - A reduction in vision from a defect present in infancy or early childhood that prevents the eye from receiving adequate stimulation
  • Defective binocular vision - The inability to use the eyes together in the correct way and which may lead to impairment of depth perception
  • Abnormal eye movement - From injury and disease effecting the eye muscles or nerves supplying the muscles, or a physical obstruction to eye movement
  • Diplopia (double vision) - From abnormal eye movements or strabismus (squint)
