Children's cancer team is honoured

POSCU Team with commendation certificate

A Trust team which treats very sick children has been recognised for its vital work.

The Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) cares for children with cancer and their families as part of a wider network of teams, including community and specialist cancer centre colleagues.

The five-member team – three specialist nurses and two consultants, led by Dr Richa Ajitsaria – was highly commended in the Team of the Year category at the recent national Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) conference.

Dr Ajitsaria said the nomination came as a surprise and, although the team knows it came from someone in the CCLG, they have no idea whom!

She said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been recognised by our peers and I am incredibly proud of my team for always going the extra mile for our patients and their families."

“The team cares for some of the sickest children and it can be tough, so recognition of the work we do here at Hillingdon is lovely to have and I’d like to thank the team and those we work alongside for their ongoing efforts.”

Little boy cancer patient and his parents with gifts

On Monday 29 April, the team celebrated their latest success story, as little Avyukt Khandelwal (8) rang the bell in the Rainbow Children’s Daycare Unit at Hillingdon, marking the end of his lengthy cancer treatment.

Staff applauded Avyukt, watched by his parents Ankit and Kanika (pictured), and presented him with a gift.
