Speech & Language Therapy (SALT)

Hillingdon Hospital Adult Speech & Language Therapy Service

We are an inpatient only service that provides assessment and management for adults (aged 18 and over) experiencing swallowing and communication difficulties, resulting from diagnosis including; stroke, traumatic brain injury, progressive neurological diseases, as well as certain respiratory illnesses.  

We cover patients within Hillingdon Hospital or Daniels Rehabilitation Unit at Mount Vernon Hospital.
Our service is available Monday-Friday 8.15am-4.15pm.

Acute service

Our acute speech and language therapists work across a range of clinical areas including intensive care, care of the elderly, cardiac and respiratory medicine. We see patients with tracheostomies, acquired neurological impairments, as well as acutely unwell patients with long term progressive conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s and Motor Neurone Disease.

Referrals are initiated by multi-disciplinary team members who are looking after the patients on the ward.

Inpatient stroke service

We provide input to the stroke unit at Hillingdon Hospital. We work as part of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to deliver the following care:

  • Inform the patient, family and MDT about the nature and prognosis of any identified communication and swallowing problems
  • Make recommendations to assist with the management and support of individuals with feeding and communication impairments.
  • Assist with oral / enteral feeding decisions
  • Identify ongoing rehabilitation/ care needs relating to swallow and communication

Neuro-rehabilitation service

We provide input to the Alderbourne Rehabilitation Unit at Hillingdon hospital and Daniels Rehabilitation Unit at Mount Vernon hospital.
We see patients who require ongoing neuro-rehabilitation secondary to acquired communication and swallowing impairments. Working with a wide range of conditions such as; slow-stream stroke rehabilitation; traumatic brain injury, hypoxic brain injury and  long term progressive conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease.
