Family Integrated Care

Our neonatal unit believes in supporting parents in becoming EQUAL partners with the neonatal team and participate in providing active care for their baby.

During your baby's journey on the neonatal unit, with our support, we hope you will feel ENGAGED, ENABLED, EDUCATED and EMPOWERED as the primary caregivers of your baby as we believe you know best for your baby.

Your bedside nurse will be able to give you lots of information about how you can support your baby.  This website also has lots of useful information and links.

If you need this in a different language - your bedside nurse can show you how to change the language

We provide monthly parental information sessions on a wide range of topics that you are more than welcome to attend.

We also have a Neonatal Parent Support group that runs every month - this is run by a parent (who is part of the Maternity and Neonatal Vises team) and our unit psychologist.  There are posters all around the unit with details about this.  Please drop if you would like too.

There are 'developmental clouds' kept by your baby's bedside which given you ideas of activities that you can do with your baby during the day

We will need you to bring the following items for your baby while they are on the unit.

  • Headphones
  • Nappies - check size with your bedside nurse
  • Cotton wool or water wipes.
  • Blankets or muslin cloths
  • Clothes - check size with your bedside nurse

Prior to discharge there may be extra things that we discuss with you.  You can find more information about this on the website 'preparing for discharge' section or you can ask your bedside nurse for a paper copy of this.  This has links to neonatal life support videos, safe sleep, car seat training and bathing.
