Frequently asked questions

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about the redevelopment of Hillingdon Hospital. These will be updated as our project progresses.

Why is a new hospital being built?

Hillingdon Hospital is an old building with parts of the estate built in the 1940s as emergency wartime accommodation. It is no longer fit for purpose and must be redeveloped to ensure that we can continue to provide our patients with the best care possible.

Our vision is to provide a state-of-the-art hospital for the residents of Hillingdon, and beyond, which supports the very best in delivery of healthcare.

We will have a digitally advanced hospital, with safety, security and technology at the heart of the design. We want our patients and staff to experience a digital hospital without boundaries - where provision of care is seamless and complete whether you are on or off our hospital grounds.

Our new hospital will bring a range of benefits including:

  •       A larger emergency department with co-located specialist services and diagnostics to improve flow and efficiency.
  •       New midwife-led unit as part of an integrated maternity service and a purpose-built inpatient area for children and young people clustered by age group.
  •       More CT and MRI scanners enabling more people to be seen with shorter waits.
  •       Increased treatment facilities in outpatients means we can do more surgery as day cases, relieving pressure on our theatres and reducing waiting times.
  •     100% inpatient single rooms with natural light which enhance privacy and dignity and provide infection control benefits.
  •       Larger critical care unit which will be able to care for more patients.

What will the new hospital look like? Why are you refreshing your designs?

We are refreshing our designs to comply with the New Hospital Programme's Hospital 2.0 national guidance. This means our new hospital will look different to the designs you may have previously seen.

This is a standardised blueprint, developed in consultation with over 1,000 clinicians including from Royal Colleges, healthcare staff and patients across the country. It incorporates the latest innovations and technology and aims to decrease building time and costs.

As our work on the new hospital progresses, there will be an opportunity for patients and the public to get involved and influence some parts of the design. This includes the colours used in departments, creation of gardens, signage and wayfinding.

Will services continue to be open as usual throughout construction? Will there be any changes to my appointments?

To build the new Hillingdon Hospital, we will need to temporarily relocate some services. This means that you may be asked to go to another location for your appointment.

Patients will be contacted directly about any changes to their appointments.

Where will the new hospital be built?

Our new hospital will be built on the current site next to the existing building.

It will be built in the shaded area that you can see on the image below, allowing the current hospital to continue operating while the works take place.

When is the new Hillingdon Hospital expected to open?

We expect to start building our new hospital in 2028 and welcome our first patients in 2032.

When was the redevelopment of Hillingdon Hospital approved?

We are part of the government's New Hospital Programme which is one of the largest infrastructure programmes in the UK.

In January 2025, the government approved the redevelopment of Hillingdon Hospital following a review of the New Hospital Programme.

We are one of a small number of schemes and the only in London that has been selected to proceed in wave one of the New Hospital Programme. Wave one schemes include the hospitals which are expected to begin construction between 2025 and 2030.

You can read more about this on the GOV.UK website.

How can patients and the public get involved?
