Lung Function (Respiratory Physiology) Department

The Lung Function Department provides a range of tests to assess how well your lungs and breathing are working. These tests are used to help diagnose and monitor conditions such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other respiratory or neuromuscular disorders. There are several different lung function tests that your doctor may refer you for. These include:

  • spirometry
  • bronchodilator reversibility test
  • gas transfer measurement
  • lung volume measurements using body plethysmograph or nitrogen washout
  • supine spirometry
  • respiratory muscle test
  • exhaled nitric oxide measurement
  • a six-minute walk test
  • a skin prick test
  • overnight pulse oximetry

Our respiratory physiologist and healthcare professionals are specially trained in lung function testing, ensuring tests are carried out safely while supporting you throughout your visit.

Why do you need these tests?

You may be referred for lung function testing if you have symptoms such as:

  • shortness of breath
  • persistent cough
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • reduced exercise tolerance.

Tests may also be required before surgery or to monitor the progression of any existing condition, or to evaluate how well your lungs respond to medication or treatment, and you may need tests before and after starting treatment.

What happens during your appointment?

Most appointments last between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the tests required. Before starting a test or appointment we measure your height and weight. You will be asked to remove your shoes and outdoor clothing before taking these measurements.

You will be asked to perform a series of breathing exercises, and some tests may involve inhaling medication. Our staff will explain each step and ensure you are comfortable.

All tests are non-invasive and generally safe.

After your test, your results will be sent to the clinician who referred you. They will discuss the results with you and explain any next steps.
