Aligning with Hospital 2.0

The designs for the new Hillingdon Hospital have been refreshed to comply with the New Hospital Programme's Hospital 2.0 national guidance.

This is a standardised blueprint that sets how key areas should be designed and laid out, including emergency care, inpatient wards, operating theatres, maternity services, diagnostics and outpatient services.  It has been developed with input from more than 1,000 clinicians, Royal Colleges, healthcare staff and patients.

As we are adopting these requirements, the proposed hospital looks different from the original design which was approved by
Hillingdon Council in 2023.

What has changed?

  • A larger building: To meet the New Hospital Programme's Hospital 2.0 requirements and provide space for all the services needed, the new hospital will be larger than our previous designs. It will include 538 overnight beds, all in single en-suite rooms, offering patients more privacy and comfort. The hospital has been designed to be future-proof, providing the flexibility to adapt to advances in healthcare and changing patient needs for years to come.
  • Better working environment for staff: With no basement, staff will work in above-ground areas with access to natural daylight, creating a more pleasant place to work.
  • Powering the hospital: A new energy centre is proposed. This will centrally generate and manage the heat, cooling, steam and electricity needed across the site, helping to keep services running smoothly 24 hours a day.

Better care and facilities

  • Expanded emergency care and specialist services which will reduce waiting times.

  • Improved access to diagnostic services.
  • Theatre, imaging and outpatient services designed to enable more same-day treatments.

  • New birthing suite, with a midwifery-led unit located alongside.

An enhanced patient experience

  • 100% single en-suite inpatient rooms, providing greater privacy, dignity and access to natural light.

  • Modern facilities designed for the highest standards of infection prevention and control.

  • Specialised areas for children and vulnerable patients, including those with mental health needs.

The latest technology

  • A modern hospital that uses real-time information to improve patient care and safety.

  • Digital wayfinding tools to help patients and visitors find their way around the new hospital more easily.

Better access

  • Improved accessibility for all our service users.

  • Buses will continue to stop on Pield Heath Road and Colham Green Road.

Car parking

  • A multi-storey car park with accessible parking and a range of other spaces.

  • A new mobility hub on the ground floor with wheelchair hire, cycle facilities, travel information and a food and drink retail outlet.
