Biometric access to the Neonatal Unit

We understand that having a baby in the Neonatal Unit can be a stressful time. To ensure a safe and secure environment while allowing easy access for parents, we have implemented a biometric fingerprint access system. This page provides essential information about the system, how it works, and what you need to do to gain access.
What is the biometric access system?
The system uses fingerprint recognition technology to allow parents and birth partners to securely enter the Neonatal Unit. This system enhances security while providing 24/7 access for authorised individuals.
Why is biometric access important?
Biometric access:
- ensures only authorised individuals can enter the Neonatal Unit
- provides quick and easy access without the need for keys or access cards
- enhances security and monitoring to protect your baby and other patients.
Who can register for biometric access?
- Parents or legal guardians of a baby admitted to the Neonatal Unit
- Designated carers/birth partner (in exceptional circumstances), with prior approval from the neonatal team.
All individuals must provide a valid photo ID during registration. If you need more information, please contact the nurse in charge.
How to register
- Visit the Neonatal Unit administrator's office between 7am-3pm, Monday-Friday
- Provide a valid photo ID for identity verification
- A staff member will guide you through the fingerprint scanning process
- Once registered, you will be able to access the Neonatal Unit using the biometric scanner at the main entrance
- Outside working hours , the nurse in charge can facilitate biometric access for all new admissions.
Using the biometric system
- Place your registered finger on the scanner at the entrance
- Once recognised, the door will unlock for a short duration to allow entry
- For the safety of babies, it is extremely important that you do not allow anyone else to enter the Neonatal Unit with you
- For any issues with access, please contact the administration team or nurse in charge.
For how long do I have access?
- Biometric access will be automatically revoked when your baby is discharged from the Neonatal Unit
- Access may also be withdrawn if necessary for security (eg. allowing an unauthorised person to enter the unit) or for safeguarding reasons
- Upon removal, your biometric data and the access log will be permanently deleted from the system.
Alternative access in case of system failure
Staff will use their ID card to allow entry and exit if the biometric system is temporarily unavailable. Press the bell outside the door to alert the staff that you wish to enter. If you wish to exit, speak to your baby's bedside nurse who will open the door for you.
Security and data protection
- Your fingerprint data is stored securely and will never be shared with third parties
- Access logs are monitored to ensure compliance with hospital security policies and are deleted upon discharge of your baby
- The system is fully compliant with data protection regulations
