Alison is Respiratory Nurse of the Year
A nurse at Hillingdon Hospital has won a top national award.
Alison Summerfield, paediatric respiratory and allergy nurse consultant, was named Respiratory Nurse of the Year at the 2023 British Journal of Nursing Awards.
The award recognised her work with the Hillingdon Children's Asthma Team and their proactive, collaborative approach to providing care at the Trust and in the community.
Alison said:
It is an absolute honour to have received this award. It is a wonderful achievement and a true acknowledgement of the whole team, who are passionate about children's asthma care within the Trust as well as throughout the borough of Hillingdon.
Some of the fantastic work undertaken by the team includes:
- Applying a structured system to identify all children and young people presenting acutely to Hillingdon Hospital with asthma/viral-induced wheeze, which then influences their care during and post discharge
- Implementation of the "7P's" for medical, nursing staff & parents for children presenting acutely to our hospitals
- Asthma Friendly Schools Initiative
- Systems implemented in the school setting to identify poor asthma control and optimise treatment to improve whilst minimising impact on children's education
- Interfaced work between primary and secondary care
- Role Modelling Clinic Programme - empowering colleagues in primary care (practice nurses & pharmacists) with the knowledge and skills to undertake paediatric structured asthma reviews & optimise care - a specific focus on reducing SABA (blue inhaler use).
- Engaging with & building links with colleagues in primary care through role modelling, mentoring and ongoing support
- Virtual parent & child workshops
- Community-based Clinical Nurse Specialist respiratory clinics near to the child's home or school
- Supporting & empowering non healthcare professionals & parents with the knowledge to support children with asthma at home and school
