CARES Award for Safety Winner: CNS Unplanned Care

This award is for viewing patient, staff and visitor safety as a priority and it was won by nurses from the Unplanned Care team after they were redeployed to the inpatient areas to support our consultant colleagues and patients during industrial action by junior doctors.

"When approached they accepted the proposal with good grace and absolute professionalism," wrote Paula Wheatley in the nomination.

"The support they provided was invaluable and ensured the safety of our patients during these periods.

They are NHS Nurses at their best

"The leadership and skills provided was of the highest standard and feedback from consultants acknowledged their vital contribution.

"Normal roles were put on hold and I know staff had to work increasingly hard to ensure their own cohorts of patients remained safe and supported.

"The professionalism and dedication shown by these nurses is truly inspiring and an example how teamwork can help us through the most challenging times. They are NHS Nurses at their best."

We were pleased to be given the opportunity to help the Trust and the staff

Bernadette Williams, a clinical nurse specialist with the team, said: "It was a very different experience from our day-to-day job but it was very enjoyable.

"We did learn a lot and were pleased to be given the opportunity to help the Trust and the staff in the wards."
