Hip patients benefit from our improvement work

Teamwork, excellent care, close monitoring and good data have helped drive significant improvements in our hip fracture care, making us second best in London and seventh in England. In addition, length-of-stay for our hip fracture patients is now below national average.
Patient data from 31 domains must be entered in the national hip fracture database, and all Trusts are subject to key performance indicators. Thanks to the efforts of our multi-disciplinary team, including monthly hip fracture review meetings to check data, monitor progress and identify areas of improvement, we have achieved these latest rankings.
The progress is a direct result of a collaboration between surgical, orthopaedic, therapy and ward teams under a framework set up then developed in the past year.
Kennedy Ward at Hillingdon Hospital, in Pield Heath Road, Hillingdon, is the focus of much of the work, with hip patients there cared for by a multi-disciplinary team which includes occupational and physio therapists, orthopaedic surgeons and geriatricians plus the ward nursing team.
The hospital admits up to 225 hip fracture patients a year, and once they are admitted the performance clock starts ticking. Under our framework there is prompt orthopaedic surgical input, and then, following a patient’s surgery, prompt reviews.
Dr Alan McGlennan, Trust managing director and chief medical officer, said: “I want to thank and pay tribute to all our hard-working and dedicated staff in the hip fracture service who have but so much effort into achieving these improvements. Well done and thank you.”
Claire Sheppard, Trust divisional director for planned care, said she was so proud of what colleagues from the different disciplines have brought about.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work, expertise, and commitment demonstrated by all”, she said. “It reflects the excellent collaboration and engagement between our orthopaedics, geriatrics, Kennedy nursing and therapy team.”
Continuous dedication to delivering high-quality care and improving our processes has truly paid off, setting a strong benchmark for others to follow
Khai Abdul, Trust service manager for trauma and orthopaedics, pain management and orthotics, said: “Thank you for your outstanding contributions. Together, we are making a real difference!
