Mariam is a patient care prize-winner

Mariam Anwar is officially the Health Care Assistant of the year!

The 29-year-old scooped the top honour at the recent London Healthcare Support Worker Awards held at Kensington Town Hall, beating 106 people to the coveted prize.

However, initially, she thought news of her success was a hoax.

“At first I thought (the confirmatory email) was a fake email because I had no idea what it was about”, explained Mariam, during a break from her duties in the outpatients department at Hillingdon Hospital.

The nomination – by a colleague, on the quiet! -  was for Mariam’s tireless efforts and willingness to help out across the department, and for making a beautifully designed CARES values noticeboard for the department, which now graces the staff room and helps to remind her colleagues there to try to ‘live’ The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s values every day.

The awards are dedicated to honouring the remarkable contributions, dedication and professionalism exhibited by Healthcare Support Workers, teams and trusts in London as they play a pivotal role in the delivery of exceptional patient care.

Not one to rest on her laurels, biomedical sciences graduate Mariam now wants to study to become a physician associate, having gained valuable experience working at our Trust.

“I graduated during the pandemic and had a placement arranged but it was cancelled because of Covid-19 so I came here to gain some experience,” said Mariam.

“I think the role of Health Care Assistants is so vital and should be developed and expanded. They have a lot to give.”
