Trust scores well on cleanliness and food

Our Trust achieved some of the highest scores in London under the 2022 Patient-Led Assessment of Care Environment (PLACE).

PLACE looks at the non-clinical aspects of care environments, such as cleanliness and quality of food; assessments are conducted by a team of patients and staff.

The results for 2022 show that in every domain the Trust achieved a higher percentage score than the national and the London-wide averages. In some domains, such as cleanliness and food, the Trust scored much higher.

Each assessment was conducted by a team of Trust staff and patient representatives from Healthwatch (NHS England’s preferred partner organisation) and Trust governors. The 14 patient assessors formed the majority of the assessment teams, which also included a group of three youth assessors from the Young Healthwatch Hillingdon initiative and six staff assessors from facilities, estates and infection control.

The assessment scores are given in six categories: cleanliness; condition, appearance and maintenance; food and hydration; privacy, dignity and wellbeing; dementia and disability. Assessors are required to score what they see on the day against the PLACE assessment criteria.

The 'cleanliness' scores were 99.7% at Hillingdon Hospital and 99.92% at Mount Vernon Hospital.

The 'patient food' scores were 97.92% at Hillingdon Hospital and 97.22% at Mount Vernon Hospital.

Across the NWL Acute Provider Collaborative, our Trust achieved the highest score for cleaning (99.92%) and the highest score for patient food (97.92%) and were in the highest scoring group of all London organisations for cleanliness and patient food.
