Staff celebrate Vaisakhi at Downing Street

Staff from Hillingdon Hospitals marked Vaisakhi at a special reception held in Downing Street.

They joined members of the wider Sikh community for the event, which included speeches from the Prime Minister and Satvir Kaur, Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office, who reflected on the remarkable contributions that Sikh communities have made across the country.

The evening also included a kirtan, a hymn, sung by school children.

The Trust was represented by midwives Satbinder Jagpal, Lucky Dhillon, and staff nurses Harjinder Singh and Karamjit Kaur from our Acute Respiratory Care Unit.

Satbinder said:

It was an honour to be invited to Downing Street and to be recognised for the Sikh community's contribution to the NHS and public service. The beautifully decorated setting, with tea lights and vibrant flowers, created a welcoming atmosphere in which to celebrate Vaisakhi - a moment of unity and reflection on the values of seva (selfless service) and compassion that guide our work.

Vaisakhi marks the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 and when Sikhism was born as a collective faith. Celebrated each April, it is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar.
